چکیده

I N B R I E F We are used to thinking of intelligence as largely a matter of genetic inheritance, but that is not the whole picture. What we do aff ects our mental wellbeing: staying physically and mentally active helps us stay sharp as we age. Nevertheless, our personal eff orts to bolster cognitive enhancement cannot forestall all declines in our cognitive performance. What is especially surprising is the powerful link between physical activity and mental acuity. Staying fi t helps us keep cognition more robust as well. Older adults who participate in aerobic exercise outperform their peers who do not.

Fact and Fiction in the Neuropsychology of Art

The time-honoured philosophical issue of how to resolve the mind/body problem has taken a more scientific turn of late. Visual cognition: a new look at the two-visual systems model.

In this paper, we argue that no valid comparison between visual representations can arise unless provision is made for three critical properties: their direction of fit, their direction of causation and the level of their conceptual content. The conceptual content in turn is a function of the level of processing. Representations arising from earlier stages of processing of visual input have ver...

Prosody, Context, and Thematic Fit meet “Gapping”: The Interaction of Multiple Constraints in Spoken Sentence Comprehension

Two studies investigated the effects of prosody, context and thematic fit on off-line and on-line processing of sentences like John greeted Paul yesterday and Ben today. Such sentences are ambiguous between the so-called 'nongapping' reading, where John greeted Ben, and the highly unpreferred 'gapping' reading, where Ben greeted Paul. Participants listen to dialogues and give a speeded response...

Physical Constituents of Qualia

In this paper I propose a defense of a posteriori materialism. Problems with a posteriori identity materialism are identified, and a materialism based on composition, not identity, is proposed. The main task for such a proposal is to account for the relation between physical and phenomenal properties. Composition does not seem to be fit as a relation between properties, but I offer a peculiar w...
